This is a day tour to the beautiful West Country as our train travels through Bristol and the Somerset Levels and onto the preserved West Somerset Railway – the longest heritage line in Britain, for a journey through the beautiful rolling Quantock Hills and along the Exmoor coast offering stunning views across the Bristol Channel to South Wales. There will be an afternoon sightseeing break in either historic Dunster or the popular seaside resort of Minehead.

At Taunton we join the picturesque West Somerset Railway for a journey over the full length of the line passing Apple Orchards and sleepy country stations which have been restored to their former glory – travelling along the coastline we stop at Dunster where you may alight and take a 20 minute walk to visit the medieval village with its historic buildings, packhorse bridge, ancient Mill, tea rooms and Priory Church – towering above the village is Dunster Castle dating back to Norman times and which is now in the care of the National Trust.

Or, continue to the popular seaside resort of Minehead with the station situated right on the promenade and picturesque harbour only a short stroll away with cafes and restaurants in abundance there is plenty to do during the two hour afternoon break. Time permitting you could join a steam train (payable locally) and take the 23 mile journey to Bishops Lydeard and await the arrival of ‘The Statesman’ for our homeward journey.
